One way to get around checkpoints is to travel in a taxi which will willingly drive through the hills on unpaved roads for about five times the cost and drop you off in obscure places from where you can continue your journey on foot. There is never a guarantee that the taxis, and the passengers, will make it as military jeeps and tanks often hide out waiting to arrest everyone and confiscate the driver's license and cab - which will cost him about five months' worth of pay to get back
